Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai (MPSP)

Green School Award is a school program organized by Seberang Perai Municipal Council continual efforts to realize “MPSP Smart Consumption Module” lifestyle through 8R; Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Regift, Recover and Recycle. It is an environmental auditing program for schools in Seberang Perai. The objective is to have holistic approach for environment management and encourage continuous improvement. Emphasis on waste reduction and conservation resources. Students will be working as a team to implement green activities and submit reports for auditing. Seberang Perai Municipal Council will provide training and workshop for teachers and students to implement projects. Regular visits to school for technical advice and school shall instill environment issue in student curriculum daily.

PROJECT RESULT

School will need to establish a green or environment committee to plan and manage daily green school activities. A system of reporting and monitoring will be formulated to enhance the continuous improvement. Besides, Parents and Teacher Association and Board of Director also could contribute financially. Before 2010, there was no collection of recycles in school. However in 2018, 100 tons of recycle were recorded and this marks a significant success. In addition, food waste from canteen is converted into compost for farming use. Electrical goods collected and sold to the registered full recovery facilities.

WHAT IMPACT HAS THIS PROJECT CREATED IN THE COMMUNITY / NATION?

Green School Programme focuses on activities to nurture the community at schools the importance to protect the environment towards a sustainable living. It strengthens the foundation of the children today towards conducive and sustainable environment of tomorrow. Young generation encourage to cultivate holistic approach in conversation of resources and continually working towards eliminating wastes. With the change of lifestyle, it is hoped we can achieved reduction of carbon footprint by 20% in the year 2020. Thus this could contribute towards Cleaner, Greener, Healthier, Safer and Happier Penang and to Malaysia.

HOW HAS THIS PROJECT HELP TO ADVANCE THE CHOSEN SDG?

The objective of Green School Award programme is to realise SDG 12 through ‘MPSP Smart Consumption Module’ by Seberang Perai Municipal Council. Briefly 8R means (Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Regift, Recover and Recycle.) All activities implemented are related to 8R and marks are given for their schools success in the target set.

THE TAGLINE FOR UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (UNSDGS) IS “LEAVING NO ONE BEHIND.” EXPLAIN HOW YOUR PROJECT HELPS TO REALIZE THE COMMITMENT OF UNSDGS FOR THE FUTURE.

Green School Award is a good education initiative to create a new generation to care for environment. Continuous self-education
in resource management instead of waste management will be top priority. Weekly workshop to be conducted in all schools and
green school teachers will be given training regularly.
Besides, Seberang Perai Municipal Council embarked the program, State Education Department, Department of Environment, nongovernment organisations and private sectors are invited to participate jointly. Together with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Tanjung Malim (UPSI), digital education green games are created to make learning more interesting. Games installed are composting, rubbish war and ocean pollution.
‘Leaving No One Behind’ as students from both primary and secondary practice ‘MPSP Smart Consumption Module’ 8R, thus towards achieving zero waste in Seberang Perai.
