Problems:

The local beach has been flooding with plastic waste for years. The local city council needs to spend 20 million every five years to create a new landfill. No one educates the public to do rubbish sorting and recycle effectively and consistently.

Solution:

We decide to provide “Recycling Education Program” to educate our next generation to embrace our mother land. Thus we target local schools. Our program broken into:

i) Know how – we provide recycling seminar

ii) Understand – we provide recycling demonstration

iii) Involvement – Monthly class recycling competition and ranking

iv) Action – Each recycling campaign, we will provide free pick up service and recycle fund will donate back to the school.

v) Monitor Performance – we provide environmental report for each recycling campaign. The report will indicate each time recycling, it reduce how many trees, how many litre petrol, reduce amount of co2 emission and even reduce how many landfill space.

vi) Moral value – we provide internship program for school students to experience the process from waste and turn into something useful. (refer Chart 1)

The tagline for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) is “Leaving No One Behind.” Please explain how the nominated project helps to realize and advance the commitment of UNSDGs for the future. Highlight any other SDG(s) that your project has directly or indirectly created positive impact to people and society

This RECYCLING EDUCATION PROGRAM helps to realize the commitment of UNSDGs from the following field:

1) Plastic waste pollution. As our river and beach flood with waste, we need to boost the awareness through an education platform – Schools. Schools cover 98% population of Malaysia as most families send their kids to school. Through the platform, they will be able to understand the importance of recycling, and also how a routine recycling campaign and a contribution index can monitor their recycling performance. Schools can help to build recycle habits for our next generation since young.

2) Environmental Cost – According to Miri City Council 2019 report, local city council spends 20 million ringgit to build a landfill every 5 years (or equivalent to 4 million each year). This environmental cost is not included the loss of animals’ life after consumed polluted plastic waste. As the recycling education programs gain more awareness among the local community, this is also able to reduce plastic waste in the landfill which is about 20% of the total waste generated.

3) Source of income and balance of life – Recycling does not require any profession, it requires action from each and individual. Through recycling, we help the poor or unfortunate family to increase their income in this new pandemic era. Old and unwanted items can be sold to recycle centre, while other low-income earners will buy. Things that are broken will be dismantled and process into raw material. People will not limit to high-value recycle items such as scrap metal. People will recycle low-value items such as plastic waste as long as they know how to sort and clean it properly. As more people learn through this recycling education program, the more low-income earner will be benefited from it.

4) In this program we also touch other Sustainable Development Goals such as:

G1 No Poverty – plastic recycling is an extra income for low-income earner

G3 Good health and well being – a clean environment like rivers and beaches tend to create a good and healthy environment for living. Plastic pollution will become lesser.

G4 Quality Education – the recycling education program works hand in hand with schools to increase public awareness through spreading the knowledge of know-how into action. Recycling becomes a habit for the future generation as they aware and understand the damages it cost to the environment.

G6 Clean Water and Sanitation – through this project, people will be able to access clean rivers and seas. This will requires lifetime education work to keep it sustainable.

G8 Decent work and economic growth – In this pandemic era, many lost their job. Recycle is an alternate source of income that does not require professional qualification, as it requires individual action to turn rubbish into raw material through segregation, sorting, and cleaning process.

G11 Sustainable cities and communities Miri city council and NGOs acknowledge the importance of recycling education hence local recycle documentaries help to spread the knowledge across our education system. We need our community to find the balance between generating waste and being responsible to reuse, reduce and recycle it.

G17 Partnership for the Goals – We can not do it alone without the support more than 20 schools and NGOs. This Recycling Education Program is benefit to all of us. We are getting support from the local Miri City Council too and together we are fostering a better life for the local community.

[28
18
