JCI South Key

Last Straw Johor is a series of projects to support the movement of no plastic straws in Johor as straw is an example of extreme waste being generated for minimal convenience. It is also the Top 10 plastic found in the ocean and beach in Johor yet the government is not taking any action.

This movement comes with an objective to educate the public to stop the use of plastic straws as the inadequate disposal has resulted in an adverse impact to our aquatic animals as well as our land and ocean. We hope to reaffirm the commitment of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 Target 1, to “prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.” Also, Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production to “reduce, reuse, recycle” with the government sector, civil sectors and the community to create the biggest impact in Johor.

HOW WAS THIS PROJECT HELP TO ADVANCE THE CHOSEN SDG?

Goal 14 Target 1, to “prevent and significantly reduce marine pollution of all kinds, in particular from land-based activities, including marine debris and nutrient pollution.”

By reducing the use of plastic straws, we can help to significantly reduce marine pollution. As straws are small and light, it is often easily dropped off from rubbish piles, and lead to finding its place in the sea or ocean. As plastic straws are the Top 10 rubbish found in ocean and beach, we have to educate and ban the use of plastic straws to sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems from pollution.

Goal 12: Responsible Consumption & Production.

Target 5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. To shift single used plastic straws to alternative such as stainless steel straws, we are doing it by responsible consumption by re-using our steel straws.
