Recycling Fertilizer Bags into Chairs

(Closing the Loop & Advancing Plastic Recycling in Malaysia)
GOAL 17: PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS
Sime Darby Plantation (SDP) uses up thousands of bags of fertilizers every few months in their palm oil plantations around the country and these bags are disposed off as normal waste which usually ends up in landfills. Upon checking the material make-up of the fertilizer bags, Heng Hiap Industries found that it was largely made of polypropylene (PP), which is easily recycled into PP resin, which in turn can be made into simple plastic chairs that are commonly used in canteens and schools.
The journey was then captured in a short video that featured how both companies worked together to not just reduce wastage but also create value from what was previously a worth- less material.
